Kate Middleton Reveals the Hilarious Reason Prince George Gets Jealous of Charlotte

Weirdly enough, it’s all about homework.

Homeschooling has become the new norm for parents across the globe, even if they happen to be members of a royal family. Kate Middleton just shared a hilariously relatable story about how her two oldest kiddos are coping with their at-home lessons.

The duchess surprised UK viewers on Thursday when she dialed in for a video chat on This Morning (a popular talk show similar to LIVE with Kelly and Ryan). Host Holly Willoughby, a mother of three herself, asked about how difficult it’s been for Kate and William to keep multiple kids occupied with their individual school lessons.

Although Prince Louis, 2, is too young for schooling, there’s apparently been some slight tension when it comes to the type of homework Prince George, 6, and Princess Charlotte, 5, get assigned. “Yeah, it’s so true, and actually George gets very upset because he just wants to do all of Charlotte’s projects,” Kate answered with a laugh. “Like, making sort of spider sandwiches is far cooler than doing literacy work.”

Charlotte’s wacky culinary assignment likely ties into her class reading a popular children’s book of the same name, Spider Sandwiches ($14.99, Amazon). We have to admit, it definitely sounds like a lot more fun than working on spelling and grammar! Obviously, those subjects are important too — especially for a future king — but we can’t help but sympathize with George. Here’s hoping Charlotte at least let her big bro take a bite of the snack she whipped up.

Kate also spoke about how all of her youngsters are dealing with not being able to see friends and family members. “It’s really hard. We hadn’t done a huge amount of FaceTime and face calls and things like that, but obviously we’re doing that a lot more now, and actually it’s been really great,” she said. “In some ways I suppose we’ve got a lot more face time than perhaps we would have done before, but it is difficult. It’s hard to explain to a 5 and a 6, nearly 7 year old, what’s going on.”

It sounds a lot like what countless families are coping with right now, proving just how universally we’ve all been affected by this global pandemic. This is something Kate is highlighting in her own project with the National Portrait Gallery in London, “Hold Still.” They’re asking UK residents to submit photos showing just how much their lives have changed in lockdown, which will be curated by Kate herself.

The website explains that the goal is to create a “collective portrait of our nation which will reflect resilience and bravery, humor and sadness, creativity and kindness, human tragedy and hope as we hold still for the good of others, and celebrate those who have continued so we can stay safe.”

Maybe Kate will let George help her pick the photos to help him feel less frustrated with his schoolwork! It might not be the same as a silly sandwich, but certainly educational about the historical moment we’re all living through.
