Lizzo Admits Poor Album Sales Were ‘Soul Crushing’ After Selling Fewer Than 2,700 Copies

Lizzo‘s new album did not live up to expectations with abysmal record sales, and the singer herself even admitted she was disappointed in its performance.

“I had all of these high hopes, I think, for what we would do the first week, and it didn’t match. It dropped, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, this isn’t what I thought it would be,'” Lizzo, 38, said during the Sunday, June 28, episode of the Swiftologist podcast.

The “Truth Hurts” singer added that she never thought the album sales “would be crazy” but she was shocked at how low they were.

“I think that there was like 24 hours of my life where I based my success and my worth on a number. And I think that was soul crushing,” Lizzo continued.

According to Rolling Stone, Lizzo’s new album, B—h, got off to a slow start after its June 5 release. It sold fewer than 2,700 copies in its first week, and sales dropped to about 650 copies in its second week. The album also failed to chart at all on the Billboard 200, while her previous album, Special, debuted at No. 2.

However, thanks to her friend SZA, she was able to put things in perspective. Lizzo said that she asked SZA if she “was a failure,” and SZA assured her she wasn’t.

“This is why I don’t judge myself and my success or my impact on numbers,” she explained. “This is why I don’t do that because it’s soul crushing if you do.”
