Usha Vance Says She’ll Never ‘Look as Good’ as Melania Trump, Talks ‘Straightforward’ Maternity Style

Vice President JD Vance‘s wife, Usha Vance, recently compared her style to Melania Trump‘s.

In an interview with Fox News that aired on Sunday, August 30, the second lady, 40, said, “The first lady’s style is very elegant and very much hers.”

“I always admire it, but there’s no universe in which I will ever look as good,” Usha laughed. “So I just go in my own direction.”

The Yale Law School graduate then spoke about her maternity wear style, which became a topic of conversation while she was pregnant with her son Alec, who was born in July.

“My approach to maternity wear was really straightforward. It was: I started sorting my closet into what fit and putting away what didn’t. And then I would wear what fit for as long as I could,” Usha explained. “I didn’t really want to acquire a huge closet. I don’t like owning a lot of clothes, so that was my approach.”

“It was really practically oriented, but I like to think I found some fun things to wear, and I felt very comfortable,” she added.

As First for Women previously reported, The New York Times published a story titled “The Politics and Power of the Pregnancy Image,” in June, in which fashion critic Vanessa Friedman analyzed how pregnant women in President Donald Trump‘s administration dress. In the article, Friedman mentioned Usha’s form-fitting coral dress she wore on an episode of her podcast with JD, 42.

Clapping back at the scrutiny, Usha shared an X post in which she wrote, “Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what The New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks! In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady.”

Usha also shared a receipt of the dress in a separate X post.
