The Scary Movie actor spoke candidly about supporting his 26-year-old son Kai‘s transition in a new interview with Variety published on Monday, May 25.
“It taught me true, unconditional love,” Wayans shared.
“At the end of the day, are my children happy? And if they’re happy, then I’m happy for them. My job as a father is to protect, respect and honor my children, and make sure they feel supported. It’s not my job to judge them; it’s my job to love them,” he told the outlet.

Wayans admitted the initial adjustment wasn’t immediate. He said it took him about a week to move “from denial to acceptance” after learning about his son’s transition. Now, the family has found their footing.
“All of my kids are gifts, and our love is the wrapping paper. And if you think you’re gonna bully my child, go somewhere else. It’s not going to happen. I won’t stand for it,” he said.
In the same interview, the actor also addressed his friendship with comedian Dave Chappelle, who has faced backlash over jokes about the transgender community in his stand-up specials.

“I wouldn’t hang with Dave if he was full of hate. I know Dave’s heart, and his intention isn’t to punch down. He’s just standing there and defending his front line as a comedian,” he said.
Wayans shares Kai and Shawn, 24, with ex Angela Zackery. The two were together from 1992 to 2013.
