This Silver-Woven Pillowcase Will Eliminate Acne-Causing Bacteria While You Sleep

Be honest: How often do you wash your pillowcase? If you’re anything like us, you probably go a wee bit longer than the two to seven days experts recommend. And that means you could be lying on a headrest that soaked in acne-causing oil and bacteria — unless you’re using one of Silvon’s antimicrobial pillowcases ($40, Amazon), that is!

These dermatologist-recommended threads are woven with pure silver that will naturally eliminate bacteria while you sleep. That’s good news, since a 2013 study that observed “bacterial communities found in nine distinct locations” in 40 different homes, concluded that much of the same bacteria on your toilet seat is also found on your pillowcase — and in slightly higher quantities (excuse us while we gag).

“The pillowcase and the toilet seat actually have a lot in common,” explained Holly Menninger, the project’s director of public science. “In fact, there is so much overlap between the bacterial strains in those two locations that it can be difficult to tell where a particular sample came from.”

Not only is it icky, it’s also no good for our skin. As Dr. David E. Bank, director and founder of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery told Living Safer, “Acne mechanica is any type of acne that is the result of material or objects touching your face. When your pillowcase isn’t laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt and oil from the environment as well as your skin and hair touching the pillow is transferred back to your skin. This can clog pores and cause blemishes.”

Silvon’s pillowcases, however, have naturally positive-charged silver within that attracts bacteria’s naturally-negative charge. Once the two have attached to each other, silver works to break down bacteria’s cells walls and destroy it before it can replicate.

When properly cared for, these 100 percent organic cotton cases, which will also let your pores breath, eliminate a whopping 99.9 percent of the bacteria that may cause breakouts.

According to reviewers, they definitely get the job done. “One pillowcase that stays fresh and clean. Seriously. No odor,” wrote one happy buyer. “And I know that it’s great for my skin. Sometimes I forget and fall asleep on a decorative or throw pillow. Always a pimple the next day. Not with Silvon. It really works.”

Added another: “This pillow is great. I struggle with adult acne and I have tried so many things to help prevent breakouts. I am typically pretty strict with changing my pillow case every other day to avoid getting those pesky cheek zits. But with this, I can keep the same pillow case on for up to two weeks before I notice any breakouts on my cheek! … These are lifesavers!”

Even better, the silver never degrades or washes away, so these pillowcases can last for years. To maintain them, machine wash in warm water without bleach and tumble dry on low.

We don’t know about you, but we’ll gladly spend a little more on our pillow covers if it means all that bacteria stays far away from our faces. Sweet dreams!
