maine coon cat in the grass
Today marks a miracle occasion for a California woman and her beloved feline companion. Two months after the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles destroyed her home, 82-year-old Katherine Kiefer’s hope was restored when she discovered her Maine coon cat named Aggie was alive. Keep reading for the details on the emotional reunion!
How Katherine Kiefer lost her cat during the L.A. wildfires
Katherine was at a doctor’s appointment the day the Palisades fire burned down her home. Her children tried to find and rescue Aggie—who has been known to hide as cats do—to no avail.
“The one thing my mom asked was: ‘Did you get Aggie?” Katherine’s daughter, Carolyn Kiefer, recalls.
Aggie is about five years old and was gifted to Katherine by a friend during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She is one of many California pets who have been displaced by the damage caused by the rampant fire.
The emotional moment Katherine reunited with Aggie
Though she had tried to keep faith, Katherine hadn’t seen Aggie since her home burned down during the Palisades fires, fearing the cat had died. So imagine her overwhelm when she received a life-altering call from the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter last weekend.
“I was very much worried that I was going to wake up and [discover] it had been a dream,” Katherine said.
Thankfully, it wasn’t too good to be true. Carolyn shared the tearful reunion Saturday in a TikTok video that has garnered millions of reactions. Katherine can be seen crying and wiping tears from her eyes when she sees the cat and cradles her in her arms.
How Aggie survived two months after the fires
Aggie had been found on the street of Katherine’s home, Carolyn said. She had been living amongst the rubble for two months, but it seemed she always remained nearby and managed to get by on scavenged food and water.
Aggie still needs to be nursed back to full health, though. Carolyn launched a GoFundMe campaign for Aggie’s veterinary bills, noting that Aggie was “skin and bone, has some signs of burns, has had one blood transfusion and is needing additional medical attention before she can come home.”
The fundraiser currently sits at over $33,000, and Carolyn noted that additional funds will be donated to local animal shelters. She and Katherine will be officially reunited with Aggie when she is released from the hospital today.
Katherine said she’s anxiously waiting to bring Aggie home, and Carolyn even shared another adorable video of her mom FaceTiming with “her favorite child,” updating viewers with the great news that Aggie’s health is improving.
Carolyn’s message for fellow pet owners: “Don’t underestimate cats.”
