Rosario Dawson Stays Fit at 42 by Doing an Exercise That’s Easy to Incorporate Into Any Routine

Her approach to both diet and exercise couldn’t be simpler.

Like many of us strive to be, actress and environmental activist Rosario Dawson enjoys maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. But instead of opting for expensive personal trainers or boutique fitness classes that are common in Hollywood, one of her favorite ways to stay in shape is super simple (and totally free!): She’s a huge fan of walking around the great outdoors.

Whether it’s a stroll around the block or a more intensive hiking and camping trip, Dawson loves to use her time outside to soak up the sun’s rays and stretch her legs. “Spending time on our screens all day isn’t natural. We’re not computers, we’re not robots, we are alive and need to be in the alive world around us,” she recently told Eating Well. “I’m not a big workout-y person… but as a born-and-raised New Yorker, I’ll walk 100 blocks and not even think about it.” Considering that walking is one of the most effective — and also one of the safest — low-impact exercises you can do, she’s definitely onto something!

In addition to heading outside for a walk and some vitamin D, Dawson sticks to a simple diet to fuel her body and stay healthy. Oatmeal, avocado toast, salads, stir-fry veggies, and ramen are a few of her go-tos. When it comes to her favorite spices, she has two that are above the rest: “I put turmeric in everything. I use a lot of ginger,” she explained. She’s also put a greater emphasis on probiotics and gut health since her father’s cancer diagnosis, and now yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut are all in regular rotation within her diet.

The weather will still be nice and crisp for at least another month or two, so why not take advantage of it to get out there and enjoy the outdoors like Dawson? Turn up those tunes or find a podcast or audiobook you love, and start taking those steps!
