LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Picture taken probably in 1940s in London of Princess Margaret, the youngest sister of future Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. Princess Margaret married in May 1960 the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones who was later created Earl of Snowdon. Princess Margaret and her husband had two children, son Linley, and daughter Sarah, but announced their separation in March 1976. When the marriage was officially ended two years later, Margaret became the first royal to divorce since Henry VIII in the 16th century. (Photo credit should read AFP/Getty Images)
Princess Margaret, the Queen’s beloved sister, oozed opulence, relished in glamour, and loved to party. Although her life was shrouded in controversy and scandal, her legacy is still as intriguing as ever.
Life in Buckingham Palace was strict, and as the younger sister of the heir-apparent, her needs were often overlooked. Eventually, the Princess blossomed into a truly beautiful woman, becoming a prominent socialite and the topic of conversation across the globe.
Known fondly as a “night owl,” it became clear that Princess Margaret was here for a good time. When her sister became Queen at only 25 years old, Princess Margaret caused quite a stir—especially when it came to matters of the heart. She married photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones, but after two children together, they divorced in 1978, causing more controversy for the Queen.
It was a life filled with the finer things–romantic trysts with celebrities and designer gowns–but what remained most important was her loyalty to the Queen, whom she loved dearly.
Her extravagant and expensive life came to an end in 2002 at the age of 71 due to a stroke. Although it’s been over a decade since her death, her legacy is still burning bright in her children and grandchildren, including 16-year-old grandson Arthur Chatto.
