It’s hard to imagine being stuck anywhere for a whopping 184 days, let alone a spacecraft traveling through space, but NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson and her team have shown us that just about anything is possible. On March 23, Dyson launched into space, arriving at the International Space Station on March 25. In a video now circulating the internet, we witness the moment in which she and Roscosmos cosmonauts Nikolai Chub and Oleg Kononenko made their landing back home.

On September 23, just before 5 a.m., the crew departed the International Space Station, landing just before 8 a.m. in Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan. A red-and-white parachute allowed for a routine landing, and the astronauts received medical screenings soon after touching down.

What did Tracy Dyson accomplish in space?

According to NASA, while aboard the Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft, Dyson’s research consisted of working with a 3D printer to produce cardiac tissue samples, potentially aiding in Earth-bound tissue and organ transplants. Additionally, she worked with a hardware that could be used in pharmaceutical production by crystallizing model proteins, and also ran a program that used student-designed software to control the station’s free-flying robots, inspiring the next generation of innovators.”

What did Tracy Dyson say about being in space for 184 days?

Just ahead of her departure from the International Space Station, Dyson spoke to NBC News affiliate KCRA, shedding light on her half a year spent in space.

“It’s been a wonderful six months up here. I’ve enjoyed the time and the camaraderie and the work,” Dyson said, before adding she was “super excited” to see her family.

“To see our planet from this vantage point is one of the most miraculous things I can think of,” she continued, telling the news station that the view of Earth from the ISS “never gets old.” “The fact that we’re here, that we can see our planet amidst the stark contrast of a black universe is one of the most fascinating things I can think of up here.”

Has Tracy Dyson been to space before?

Dyson has been an astronaut since 1998, and since then, has taken part in countless missions that have advanced research and science as we know it. Dyson has just returned from her third mission into space, her first being in 2007 aboard the space shuttle Endeavor on STS-118.

On this spaceflight in particular, the mission covered 2,944 orbits of Earth and an impressive journey of 78 million miles. Additionally, Dyson Dyson also completed a 31-minute spacewalk.

What is a spacewalk?

When an astronaut exits their spacecraft, that is considered a spacewalk—almost like you see in the movies. When these researchers are geared up in their white suits, able to survive the elements of space for research, they are tethered to their spacecraft so as not to float away.

What happens to astronauts when they come back from space?

As one would imagine, living in space for months at a time certainly takes its toll on your body. According to the Baylor College of Medicine, two parts of the body that are affected by space travel are the bones and muscle, as the lack of gravity means you aren’t using things like your legs to keep you moving.

Additionally, sometimes those returning from space struggle with their balance and equilibrium due to the change in gravitational atmosphere. Additional issues may affect the gastrointestinal system, vision and balance.

We hope these brave astronauts have a smooth adjustment period back down here on Earth!
