Nothing is more sobering than missing a terror attack by mere minutes. Josh Groban is feeling grateful on October 31, after avoiding a gruesome attack in New York City. A 29-year-old suspect allegedly drove a truck into pedestrians before shooting at them, and Josh would have been there if not for a stroke of luck. He took to Twitter to explain what happened to fans in a stunning string of tweets.

“Oh my God, I just heard gun shots and ran with my dog. Downtown. F–k,” he began. Before he even knew what had happened, he tried to warn his followers to stay away. “I hope everyone’s OK. Was half a block from me, didn’t see it but heard 8-10 quick rounds fired off. Be safe with your kids out there. I’m shaking.” It sounds like fate kept Josh away from the attack. “That’s the corner I was supposed to have my coffee but my dog pulled me into the park half a block away 10 [minutes] before shooting,” he explained. “Devastated for the victims and their families tonight and inspired by the spirit of this city. Sirens and trick-or-treaters everywhere.” Josh also applauded the emergency crews for how quickly they handled the situation, and tweeted a video of the NYPD and Fire Department doing their jobs.

Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky as Josh. Eight people were killed in the horrifying attack, according to CNN. The suspect reportedly drove a rented Home Depot pickup truck into a school bus and exited the vehicle while seemingly holding weapons before being shot in the abdomen by police, who identified him as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. “This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, “aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them.” Our hearts go out to everyone affected.
