Jennifer Lopez Believes Google Owes Her a Check for Being the Reason Google Images Was Invented
Jennifer Lopez knows her iconic Versace dress at the 2000 Grammy Awards helped shape internet history — and now she’s joking that Google owes her a check for it.
The 56-year-old superstar appeared on an episode of SubwayTakes with Kareem Rahma, where she reflected on the now-famous green Versace silk chiffon gown designed by Donatella Versace.
The plunging, jungle-print dress became one of the most talked-about red carpet looks of all time — and, as Lopez noted, sparked such a surge in online searches that it ultimately played a role in the creation of Google Images.
“I wore the Versace dress. Because people searched for it, they invented Google Images,” Lopez said in the Tuesday, June 30 episode. “Sergey Brin, cofounder of Google along with Larry Page) and all the guys who invented Google confirmed.”
Now, she’s making it clear she thinks that history should come with compensation. “I feel like they owe me a check,” Lopez added. “They should’ve done that for good karma because they’re probably trillionaires or whatever. Just to be nice.”
According to People, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt previously called the searches in 2000 for Lopez’s look the “most popular query” the company had ever seen.
The dress has only grown in pop culture status over the years, even inspiring modern recreations. Actress Mika Abdalla recently wore a replica of the Versace dress in Prime Video’s hit new romance series Off Campus.
Lopez, who has been busy in recent weeks promoting her latest film, Office Romance, also recently said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that she will re-wear the dress in 20 years.
“I’m gonna make a promise right now. I’m gonna wear it in 20 years. And it’s gonna look good. You’re not gonna hate it,” she said, per People.
