“Let’s be heroes!” is what James Van Der Beek said as football quarterback Jonathan “Mox” Moxon in the 1999 movie, Varsity Blues and it seems he’s sticking with that message today. The star of the football film, who recently announced his diagnosis of colorectal cancer, has shared he is revisiting the movie to help out others in similar situations.

Van Der Beek took to Instagram to share that he will be releasing limited-edition jerseys from Varsity Blues, each of which will be signed by the star himself. The jerseys will feature his character’s nickname, Moxon, and the No. 4, the same which was used in the movie.

In the post, shared to the star’s social media, Van Der Beek wrote, “Merch drop! Excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of #VarsityBlues with a limited edition #4 Moxon jersey—each one personally autographed by me.”

The actor also explained, “100% of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own ?).”

The jerseys are currently available for purchase on Van Der Beek’s website, JVDB.Shop.

James Van Der Beek shares his journey with cancer

The former Dawson’s Creek star opened up about his diagnosis one month ago. “I have colorectal cancer,” Van Der Beek shared. “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family… There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

Van Der Beek also shared an Instagram post about his diagnosis, prior to speaking with People.

“It is cancer…” the actor started the post. “Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I’m one of them… I’d planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon… to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms. But that plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news.”

He continued, “I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before.”

Just today, the star spoke with Good Morning America’s co-anchor Robin Roberts, where he gave an update on his journey with the disease.

“Physically, I’m great,” he explained. “I’m feeling really good emotionally. You know, it’s a lot. It’s really a ride… As soon as I got diagnosed, I knew, all right, this is going to add many happy years to my life. I’m going to make changes that I never would have made otherwise, that I’m going to look back on in 30 years and say, ‘Thank God this happened.’ So, what can I do right now in order to make that the case? And that’s how it was, about 90% of the time.”

But Van Der Beek explained that the extra percentage of time was not easy to deal with. “10% of the time, I was a sobbing, terrified mess, which I feel like is a pretty good percentage,” he said.

James Van Der Beek says everyone should take precautions

Despite how he’s been dealing with the past year of going through treatment and testing, Van Der Beek says he hopes to get the word out and hopefully spare anyone of the same experience.

“The more I could get the word out to get tested… whatever I can do to get that word out… as amazing and cathartic as this year has been, it’s been really tough,” Van Der Beek said. “If I can help spare anyone the experience of my last year, I would definitely do that.”
