Feta Cheese with Olives and oil on wooden background
If you’ve got a charcuterie board in a mind for a New Year’s Eve bash, then you know that olives are a must for a salty and briny bite. However, they deserve a little more love than just being drained from the jar and placed in a bowl. That’s why you should upgrade them to stuffed olives. These olives are filled with cheese and tossed in flavored oil before serving. It’s so simple to make and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. You can even make them in advance, which is a great option that saves you time and allows the savory flavors to deepen. Here’s how to make stuffed olives as the ultimate appetizer for your upcoming NYE party!
What are stuffed olives?
Stuffed olives involve filling pitted olives with cheese and coating them in flavored olive oil. The olives are typically served on toothpicks on their own or to accompany a charcuterie or antipasti spread. Stuffing the olives with cheese gives them a sharp and an extra savory flavor.
Best types of olives and cheese to use for this appetizer
There are two main elements of this snack, olives and cheese, so let’s explore the best varieties of each to achieve delicious results. With the olives, it’s best to go for large green pitted olives, such as Castelvetrano, or Spanish Queen, as they’re firm and sturdy enough to hold the cheese. Also, these olives boast a meaty, buttery texture that complements the creamy cheese inside.
As for the cheese, use soft varieties like feta, blue cheese and cream cheese. Not only are these cheeses full of flavor but they’re easy to stuff inside of each olive. Depending on the recipe, you’ll either stuff the olives by hand or using a piping bag until the center is completely filled.
