‘Hondo’s Not Done Yet!’—Shemar Moore Returns in ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Spinoff With a Bold New Team

In a surprising turn of events, it is not the end of S.W.A.T. after all. The action series will be returning in the form of the spinoff, S.W.A.T. Exiles. After announcing the show would be coming to an end after eight seasons, Sony Pictures Television announced it wouldn’t actually be the end of its story.

Shemar Moore, who starred on S.W.A.T. as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, will be returning as the lead in the 10-episode series. Although the show hasn’t been sold to any outlets just yet, Sony is sure that it will find “the right homes and partners for these new stories to reach the passionate ‘S.W.A.T.’ fanbase and attract new viewers,” according to a press release.

The announcement comes just days after the S.W.A.T. series finale, but this isn’t the first time the S.W.A.T. series has been revived. The action series has almost been chopped a number of times. The show initially was to be cancelled after Season 6 in 2023, which was ultimately undone and again after Season 7. Finally, after this most recent season, CBS has officially ended the series.

The reason behind the almost cancellations is to do with licensing deals between CBS, Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios, which were agreed upon for the seventh and eighth seasons. However, for this new spinoff, Sony Pictures Television is going solo.

What is ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ about?

Although nothing has been shot yet, Sony shared that they are already developing the series with plans to begin production this summer in Los Angeles. The official logline for the series is below.

“After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”

Joining as showrunner and executive producer is Jason Ning, known for Lucifer. Moore will also be an executive producer, along with Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty and James Scura.

Keith Le Goy, Sony Pictures TV chairman, shared his thoughts on expanding the S.W.A.T. universe, explaining, “We believe in championing powerful storytelling and in our teams’ exceptional ability to create and deliver these stories to audiences around the world. This belief is embedded in our DNA and central to every decision we make.”

Sony Pictures TV also shared the announcement on its social media platforms with a video of Moore talking about the upcoming spinoff.

“You heard it here first,” the caption began. “Hondo’s not done yet. Be on the lookout for S.W.A.T EXILES—he’s back not just to lead, but to rebuild. New recruits. No second chances.”
