Cheesy, Easy Grilled Halloumi Burgers Are Filled With Flavor + Ready in Just 30 Minutes!

Cook up these delicious vegetarian burgers for your next barbecue

Craving a really good meat-free burger? Meet your new favorite protein: halloumi. This semi-soft cheese from Cyprus can be found in the dairy section of your local supermarket. It’s a blend of cow, goat and sheep’s milk with a creamy, briny flavor, and it tastes like a cross between feta and mozzarella. What’s super special about this cheese is that it doesn’t melt. Instead, it holds its shape and browns when it’s exposed to high heat, such as during grilling or frying. No wonder then that halloumi makes the perfect vegetarian burger! And it’s a great alternative to veggie burgers when you want something a little different.

For our quick and easy grilled halloumi burger recipe, the cheese is fried until golden and crispy. We put it on a sourdough bun and then add some chili sauce and other fixings. It’s hearty, satisfying, and delicious! Give it a try and drop us a comment below.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup arugula
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 Tbs. chopped pepitas
  • 1/2 lb. halloumi, cut into 1/3-inch slices
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 flat mushrooms, cut into 1/3 inch slices
  • 4 sourdough buns, halved, toasted
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 avocado, seeded, sliced
  • Sweet chili sauce and sour cream

Instructions

• Line an oven tray with baking paper. Place flour on a plate and egg in a shallow dish and combine crumbs and pepitas in a bowl.

• Dip halloumi in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into egg, and toss in crumbs, pressing to coat. Place on tray. Chill until required.

• In a large nonstick frying pan, heat oil on high. Cook mushroom slices one to two minutes each side until tender. Drain on paper towel.

• In same pan, cook halloumi one to two minutes each side until crisp and golden. Drain on paper towel. 

• Spread bun bases with mayonnaise. Fill rolls with arugula, tomato, halloumi, and avocado. Drizzle with chili sauce. Serve with sour cream.
