Viral Strawberry Iced Matcha Latte Recipe Is the Drink of the Summer: My Taste Test

This sip whips up to luscious perfection with just 5 ingredients!

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to my coffee shop order (latte lovers stand up!), but every so often I’ll try something new. This couldn’t be more true as of late as iced strawberry matcha drinks have been popping up on café menus and online. It puts a fruity spin on a regular iced matcha latte by adding fresh strawberry sauce called compote. Each sip is sweet and creamy with hints of earthy nuttiness. Plus, you can save yourself the coffee shop prices by whipping up this drink at home. Here’s how to make this trendy sip along with my taste test of a DIY version!

What ingredients are in strawberry iced matcha latte

This drink contains steeped matcha, milk and strawberry compote. These ingredients are layered into the glass over ice and stirred just before sipping. It’s a sip that’s bursting with tasty flavors and vibrant colors — no wonder many are crowning it “drink of the summer.”

3 tips for making a refreshing strawberry matcha drink

Preparing this drink yourself is easier than you might think. Just follow these three easy tips to enjoy a thirst-quenching strawberry matcha latte.

1. Prep a no-cook strawberry compote.

Instead of simmering the compote to soften the strawberries, TikToker user @Kristeacafe shares a shortcut, no-cook method. She says to mash or blend a handful of sliced strawberries with about 1 Tbs. of sugar until a thick purée forms. If needed, add a splash of water, but avoid making it too watery.

2. Use this ratio when steeping the matcha.

For a serving of rich-tasting matcha, combine 2 tsp. of the green powder with ¼ cup of water. The water should be hot but not boiling in order to preserve the tea’s delicate flavors. (If you’re new to making matcha, try this Starter Kit from Jade Leaf. Or, upgrade your tea-making tools by opting for the Upton Tea Imports Competition Grade Matcha Set.)

3. Layer the ingredients in this order.

Pouring the liquid ingredients in the right order ensures they’ll mix together nicely once stirred. So, it’s best to add the compote first then a layer of ice, the milk and matcha on top.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup strawberry compote
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tsp. matcha powder
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • Ice

Directions:

  • Yield: 1 drink
  1. Using fine mesh strainer, sieve matcha powder into small bowl. Gently pour in water and whisk vigorously using bamboo whisk (also called chasen) in W or M pattern around 20 to 40 seconds. Steeped matcha is ready when top is very foamy. (Note: Use this video from the PureMatchaTeas YouTube channel as a guide for whisking the tea properly.)
  2. Assemble drink by placing compote at bottom of tall glass. Add ice, milk and matcha. Stir with straw and enjoy!

My taste test

Although the layers of my ingredients were slightly wonky, it was nothing a good stir couldn’t fix! Once mixed, I quickly admired the drink’s green hue with tiny flecks of red from the strawberries before taking a sip. The matcha’s nuttiness paired well with the creamy milk and sweet yet mildly tart berries. I was also happy to have a nice layer of matcha foam on top, which added a luscious feel to the drink. In my book, this DIY version is just as delicious as what I’d buy at a coffee shop. My top suggestion would be stirring in simple syrup to taste if you prefer a more sugary flavor. But, this sip is a nice change of pace especially for diehard java lovers like myself!
