More than three decades after Nicole Brown Simpson‘s death, her former boyfriend Joseph Perrulli still likes to imagine the life she never got to live.

“Nicole was only 35 years old when she was killed,” Perrulli, 65, says in an exclusive interview with First for Women. “I think anyone who knew and loved Nicole wonders that same thing from time to time.”

While no one can know how Nicole’s life would have unfolded, Perrulli believes there are certain things about her that would have never changed.

“It’s impossible to know what her life would have become, but I have no doubt she would have continued to love and support her children,” he explains, referring to Nicole’s daughter, Sydney, and son, Justin, who she shared with ex-husband O.J. Simpson.

“I also believe she would have found her way back to Laguna Beach, a place that never truly left her and vice versa,” Perulli continues.

Nicole grew up in Orange County and spent much of her youth in and around Laguna Beach, but after marrying O.J., she moved to the Los Angeles area, where she lived until her death in 1994.

Perulli says that revisiting memories of Nicole and their time together became deeply personal while he was writing his newly released memoir, The Forgotten Briefcase. The book focuses on the rediscovery of a briefcase that held photos and journals talking about the time they spent together.

“As I mention in the book, I truly felt her presence near me the day I opened the briefcase,” he tells First for Women. “That presence compelled me to write what would become The Forgotten Briefcase.”

Perrulli dated Nicole for several months after her 1992 divorce from O.J. Less than two years later, on June 12, 1994, Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered outside of her Brentwood, California home.

While O.J. was eventually acquitted of the killings in his 1995 criminal trial, he was later found liable for the wrongful deaths in a 1997 civil trial.

The former NFL star was later diagnosed with prostate cancer and he died at the age of 76 in April 2024.
