Believe it or not, beauty queen Kate Hudson doesn’t have a super involved skincare or makeup routine. As a fan of the basics, she throws on not much more than some sunscreen, blush, and lip gloss before she heads out the door. However, when she’s getting dolled up, the actress uses a super simple eyeliner trick that she swears really makes her peepers pop — and we just had to share it with you.

In an interview with Vogue, Hudson went into her skincare and makeup routine. While she admits that most days she doesn’t fuss over her face, she likes to glam it up from time to time in a way that isn’t overdoing it. “I use a lot of natural products and really try to strike a balance of organic and conventional brands so that I’m not using too many chemicals on my skin,” she said.

To give her eyes a subtle pizzaz, she turns to a trick she learned from a makeup artist on a movie set long ago. “Applying eyeliner to the inside of your upper eyelid will accentuate your eyes in a natural looking way,” she said. “White eyeliner really opens them up while brown or black is more defining.”

The technique, called tightlining, is a popular method used by makeup artists to make the eyes pop. As Hudson says, using a dark eyeliner like brown or black can give the eyes a more dramatic look and makes the eyelashes look fuller, while using white eyeliner will make your eyes look bigger and wider. Beauty experts say that this is a great go-to on its own if you’re going for a more natural “no-makeup” look, or you can do it to emphasize the eyes when creating something more dramatic, like a smokey eye.

Here’s a video tutorial on how to do it.

Hudson shared one more beauty secret she’s learned during her career. “Also, most makeup artists will tell you to go to sleep early and get your beauty rest,” she explained. “Beauty truly does come from the inside out; diet, exercise and hydration all play a part too.” Ain’t that the truth?

We hope you’ll try out this super simple technique the next time you’re heading out. With easy tricks like these, a little effort goes a long way!
