John Stamos is proving the Full House theme song true — “Everywhere you look, there’s a heart, a hand to hold onto” — after Dave Coulier, best known for portraying Joey Gladstone on the 80s/90s sitcom, announced he was diagnosed with cancer.

John Stamos’ emotional message to Dave Coulier

Following the public announcement, Stamos was quick to share his love for his close friend and former co-star, whom he’s said is like a brother.

Stamos’ Instagram post to Coulier reads, “My brother from day 1. Love you @dcoulier and I’ll be by your side through it all,” and features multiple sweet pictures from throughout their friendship.

Coulier commented on the post, writing, “I love you and can’t wait to see you tomorrow!!!” with his wife Melissa (Mel) Coulier writing, “Love you PP – thank you for the daily support and love!! ❤️❤️”

How the ‘Full House’ cast supported Coulier amid his diagnosis

The Full House cast has been there for each other through thick and thin since the series debuted in 1987, including the passing of one of their own, Bob Saget, who portrayed Danny Tanner. Saget died suddenly from a head injury in early 2022, a difficult time for all of his loved ones. His passing brought the surviving Full House cast even closer together. As such, Coulier made sure to inform his former co-stars of his diagnosis before it was out in the world.

I didn’t want them to hear it from someone else, so I sent a text message out,” Coulier said, explaining their reactions were “immediate.”

“It was just this outpouring of, ‘I will be there. You just name the time, and I know you’re in great hands with Mel, but what can we do?’” he said. “It really is overwhelming the love that we have for each other. We’ve been there for so many years for each other and it’s pretty remarkable.”

Stamos, who has been a close friend and brother-like figure, has told Coulier, “If you want to just sleep, I’ll just sit by you or if you want to listen to music or just talk, whatever.” Coulier shared his reaction, saying “Wow. That’s like a brother. That’s just truly a brother.”

Coulier and the Full House cast are very supportive of each other, which the actor says he appreciates. Their love for each other was not just on-screen but extends into real life as well.

“We value those good times and the positive moments that we’ve gotten to share,” Coulier explained. “And I think that that spills over to other people, and it’s just positive. There’s not many negatives when I’m with that group of people. It’s really just laughter and positivity, and we appreciate so much what we have in our lives and the people around us.”

Dave Coulier opens up about his cancer journey

The actor, 65, learned he had stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on going to the doctor’s office for swelling in his lymph nodes after an upper-respiratory infection. The swelling rapidly increased, with one area growing to what Coulier says was the size of a golf ball, causing his doctors to recommend PET and CT scans.

Three days later, my doctors called me back and they said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it’s called B cell and it’s very aggressive’… I went from, I got a little bit of a head cold to I have cancer, and it was pretty overwhelming,” he says. “This has been a really fast roller coaster ride of a journey.”
