Katie Thurston recently gave fans an update on her battle with cancer, one year after receiving the diagnosis.

The former Bachelorette star, 35, said while her “recent scans came back as stable,” there was still one detail that caused her to worry.

“While [the stable scans] are a very good thing, it’s the first time in a year that the tumor hasn’t been shrinking, that it just is stagnant, which had me kind of spiraling a little bit,” Thurston said in a video shared via Instagram on Tuesday, February 17.

She added that after “talking to her oncologist” and “going over everything,” her doctors made sure she knew there were “a couple of things to consider.”

“One, in the last four months, I had to take a four-week break and a two-week break from my medication. So, that could play a role into why it’s showing stable and not shrinking,” Thurston continued.

The former reality star explained that at first, it made her think her “medication wasn’t working anymore.” However, she learned that it was “common for the tumor to shrink at first” and then “slow down.”

Thurston told fans that over the past year, her tumor had “shrunk by over 50 percent” and her PET scan “showed no new spread,” which was “great news.”

The Washington state native also revealed that she had officially decided to undergo a double mastectomy and she said she had plans later this week to meet with her surgeon regarding the details of the operation.

Thurston first discovered a lump in her breast in 2024, but because she had previously had benign cysts removed from the same breast, she assumed that was the cause. When the lump didn’t go away, she decided to have it checked out and in February 2025 she was diagnosed with cancer.

The following month, she announced to fans that the disease had metastasized to her liver and she was now living with stage 4 cancer.

Thurston remained positive about her diagnosis though.

“I know stage 4 can sound very scary and it can be,” she said in an Instagram video March 28, 2025. “But given that I am triple-positive and the spots on my liver are fairly small and detected early, I feel very optimistic on my outcome.”
