Social media has been buzzing about a blue tonic drink for weight loss recently. And odds are you’ve seen various recipes—and health claims—for the drink pop up in your feed. While a tropical blue tonic sounds delicious and refreshing, does it really support fat burn? We asked experts for their opinions on the mixture and how you can adjust the recipe for even better results.

What is a blue tonic drink for weight loss? An easy recipe

There are quite a few variations of the blue tonic drink making the rounds, but most of the staples that supposedly boost weight loss efforts are consistent. Here’s one version of the mixture from social media fan Mary Ann Meals

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp. blue spirulina powder
  • 1 Tbs. lemon juice
  • 1 Tbs. ginger
  • 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar

How a blue tonic may support weight loss

While we know that there’s no magic bullet for weight loss, the trendy blue tonic drink does actually contain ingredients that can complement a healthy diet and exercise routine. Here are the benefits of each:

Water boosts your metabolism

Experts say adequate hydration is key for metabolic and digestive function as well as appetite regulation, all of which are crucial for weight loss.

“Our brain does not tell us the difference between thirst and hunger,” says Adiana Castro, RDN, CLT, metabolic dietitian and owner of Compass Nutrition in NYC. “I recommend drinking water throughout the day so when you eat, you know it is truly a hunger signal and not a thirst signal.”

Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism suggests that drinking 17 oz. of water can speed up your metabolic rate by up to 30 percent for about an hour. This means drinking 68 ounces (about 8 ½ cups) of water throughout the day could increase your resting energy expenditure by approximately 96 calories.

Blue spirulina powder curbs hunger

Spirulina powder (an edible algae) is a protein-rich ingredient that can reduce hunger and promote satiety, explains Trista Best, RD, LD, Registered Dietitian at The Candida Diet.

“Blue plants like blue-green algae have anthocyanins, a type of polyphenol, and phycocyanin, an antioxidant that helps reduce inflammation,” adds Castro. “Chronic inflammation can reduce metabolism.”

In addition to keeping you fuller for longer, the protein content supports muscle recovery and growth, notes Castro. This is important because when you have more muscle mass, your body burns more calories both actively and at rest.

Lemon tames inflammation

While some research suggests that the acidity in lemon can slow gastric emptying to aid in managing appetite, the real benefit of lemon in regards to weight loss is its Vitamin C content, which helps reduce metabolism-slowing inflammation.

Ginger blocks blood sugar spikes

Ginger is lauded as a digestive aid to ease bloating, indigestion and nausea, and it also helps prevent inflammation, explains Castro. Another plus? The spice helps regulate blood sugar, which prevents insulin spikes that increase fat storage, adds Best.

What’s more, ginger has a thermogenic effect, meaning your body temperature slightly rises while digesting it. This offers a mild metabolism boost, says Catherine Gervacio, RD, a registered nutritionist and diet consultant for WOWMD.

Apple cider vinegar burns fat

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) contains acetic acid, which reduces fat storage and improves insulin sensitivity,” says Best. “It may also improve satiety and lead to an overall reduction in calories. ACV also supports gut health, which is associated with weight regulation.”

How to boost the benefits of a blue tonic for weight loss

You can add or subtract any ingredients to your liking, but experts say there are a few additions that can help heighten the weight loss impact of blue tonic.

Spice things up

Best says including cayenne pepper can increase metabolism and fat oxidation, thanks to the spice’s capsaicin. Also smart? Sprinkle some cinnamon, which provides cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols that help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation, recommends Castro.

Choose a smart sweetener

If you’re looking to add a bit of sweetener for taste, the options most conducive to weight management would be natural sugar substitutes like stevia, monk fruit or allulose, Castro offers.

Add extra fiber

“I suggest adding chia seeds to [the blue tonic] for fiber and more nutrients,” says Gervacio. “They can also increase fullness and contribute to better digestion.”

Sip it warm

It can also be helpful to use warm instead of cold water for the base of the drink, says Julianna Coughlin, RD. “While cold water has a thermogenic effect, warm water with lemon, ginger and ACV first thing in the morning can stimulate digestion and detoxification,” she explains.

She also advises having a blue tonic before meals, as ACV and lemon can help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes and control appetite to promote better weight loss results.
