A good romantic comedy tends to have the following: A dashing male lead, a quirky leading lady played by a stunning Hollywood actress, and, more often than not, a wedding. While there’s no saying why so many of our favorite rom-coms revolve around matrimony, it isn’t like we’re complaining about it. Here, take a look at our ranking of the best of the best. Did your favorite make our list?
8. Bride Wars (2009)
Nobody does an early 2000s rom-com like Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, and in 2009’s Bride Wars, these leading ladies go head to head. Growing up together, this duo of childhood best friends always dreamed of getting married at the Plaza Hotel in June. Both engaged, a mix-up results in their weddings being set for the same day. As tensions rise, animosity does too as the so-called best friends attempt to sabotage the other’s big day.
7. 27 Dresses (2008)
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride is how this story goes. Starring Katherine Heigl, a woman struggles as her sister is set to marry her boss, the man she secretly loves. Meanwhile, a handsome reporter covering the big day sees a story in the eternal bridesmaid.
6. Runaway Bride (1999)
Having ditched the altar on her big day three times already, Maggie, played by Julia Roberts, has earned quite the reputation for herself. When a journalist played by Richard Gere pens a story about this alleged “runaway bride” based on a story he heard in a bar, Maggie confirms that the piece is full of embellishments, costing the man his job. His redemption? Find the woman and tell the real story. The only problem? He starts falling for her too.
5. The Wedding Planner (2001)
When a handsome pediatrician rescues a wedding planner from a near-death experience, the two spend an unforgettable night together—only for her to learn that she’s planning his wedding.
4. Father of the Bride (1991)
A man grapples with the marriage of his young daughter to a guy she met while abroad in this tear-jerking 90s classic.
3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
A Greek woman meets a non-Greek man and falls for him despite their major cultural differences. Will the couple be able to overcome the pressures of her overbearing family?
2. My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Julianne and Michael made a pact that come 28, should they be unmarried, they’d tie the knot with each other. However, when just short of her 28th birthday Michael reveals he’s engaged, Julianne comes to the realization that she’s in love with him—complicating her situation enormously. Starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz, this film is a wedding-oriented rom-com classic.
1. Bridesmaids (2011)
Is it fair to say that no matrimony-themed movie has made us laugh as hard as this one? Because in our eyes, Bridesmaids takes the (wedding) cake. When Annie’s best friend gets engaged and asks her to be the maid-of-honor, she finds herself head-to-head with another one of the bridesmaids who’s fighting for the title.
