The cast of 'Scrubs'
It’s time to head back into the OR because Scrubs is coming back in the form of a reboot. The series is being developed by ABC and although not much is confirmed just yet, one fan-favorite member is returning to the team.
Main character J.D., portrayed by Zach Braff, has signed on to reprise his role in the upcoming series and is currently the only original cast member set to return. However, with Braff signed on, it is likely that much of the cast will follow suit, considering the stars have kept a tight bond since the original show came to an end.
The creator of the show, Bill Lawrence, will be returning as an executive producer; however, he will not be taking on the role of showrunner this time around. This likely has to do with Lawrence’s exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. TV, but for now, fans have him back as some part of the project.
What will the ‘Scrubs’ reboot be about?
There is no concrete information on the potential plot of the upcoming series, but Lawrence has discussed his ideas in previous interviews. While nothing is confirmed, he has thoughts on what a Scrubs reboot would mean.
“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence said of a potential reboot at the time. “A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling…it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”
Braff, too, has spoken about the reboot before anything was confirmed, explaining that he would definitely be interested in reprising the famed role.
“The idea of getting back together with my friends and doing like 10 or 12 episodes of maybe one or two seasons, and just laughing with everyone? That sounds like a dream,” Braff shared.
About ‘Scrubs’
It’s been almost 25 years since Scrubs first aired on NBC in 2001. The series ran for nine seasons and came to an end in 2010, so it’s been 15 years since the actors left their scrubs behind.
The show was previously canceled after its seventh season but was later renewed by ABC for its eighth. Although that, too, was meant to be the end, they brought Scrubs back for a ninth season, with Braff only appearing in half of the episodes.
Alongside Braff, actors Donald Faison as Chris Turk, John C. McGinley as Perry Cox, Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Ken Jenkins as Bob Kelso and Neil Flynn as the janitor. Considering the close friendship the cast has maintained, especially Braff and Faison, it’s likely you’ll be seeing a few familiar faces in the new episodes.
