A Guide to All of the ‘Dexter’ Spin-Offs and Prequels Ahead of the New Series, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

The Dexter cinematic universe is one that is constantly in flux and ever-expanding—and even after the way Dexter: New Blood concluded, fans were excited to learn that the killer with a code is still alive and well and ready to take on the next chapter. This July, you won’t want to miss the all-new installment set to hit screens titled Dexter: Resurrection, but before we dive into what’s expected from this exciting new chapter, viewers should be sure they’re properly caught up and know the foundation. Here, a guide to all of the Dexter spin-offs, sequels and prequels, plus, a look at what fans can expect from Dexter: Resurrection.

Dexter (2006—2013)

Fans were first introduced to Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, back in 2006. The blood splatter analyst flew under the radar working for the Miami police department, but outside of work, he hid a gruesome secret. As a young child, when his adoptive father noticed tendencies that could potentially spiral out of control, he taught him to channel the things he felt elsewhere, turning him into a killer who only preyed on those who had harmed others and weren’t punished for it. This unique vigilante-style code made for one of the most entertaining series on television, and Dexter’s story didn’t end there! Watch it on Netflix and Paramount+.

Dexter: New Blood (2021—2022)

At the end of Dexter, we watch as the character fakes his own death and sets out to create a new life for himself off the grid. Dexter: New Blood jumps ahead a decade and takes us to the new era of Dexter’s life in which he’s living with a new name and identity in Upstate New York. While there, he receives an unexpected visit from his teenage son whom he left behind, complicating the quiet life he had created. If Harrison’s arrival wasn’t enough to shake things up, the presence of a new serial killer certainly will, making Dexter wonder if he truly can hide from the other half of himself. Watch it on Paramount+.

Dexter: Original Sin (2024—2025)

Dexter: Original Sin is the Dexter prequel series we didn’t know we needed but are glad we got! The story takes us back to Dexter’s origin and his early days working at the police department while he learns to navigate the two sides of himself. With the help of his father, portrayed by Christian Slater, viewers see how Dexter’s code came to evolve. Watch it on Paramount+.

Dexter: Resurrection is coming this summer!

The newest installment in the Dexter cinematic universe is Dexter: Resurrection. The show continues where Dexter: New Blood left off, with the title character waking from a coma after he was shot by his son. In an effort to make things right, Dexter sets out to New York to find him—though things are never as easy as we imagine them to be, with faces from Dexter’s past coming to confront him. If this new chapter of the story wasn’t exciting enough, the star-studded cast lineup certainly is. Joining Michael C. Hall in Dexter: Resurrection is Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, as well as guest stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, Krysten Ritter, David Zayas and more. Stream the first two episodes on July 11 on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, or watch it live on Sunday, July 13 on SHOWTIME at 8 p.m.
